Basic Principles for Studying God’s Word

There is quite a bit of confusion over how to study the Bible. This confusion has led to extremes—including hesitancy in approaching the Bible at all (as though it can never be understood) or, on the other end of the spectrum, heretical doctrine. God has given us his Word to be read, studied, understood, enjoyed, applied, and shared. It is meant to be one of our greatest joys, because through Scripture, we get to know our Creator and his will for our lives.

Consider what David proclaimed about God’s Word, “O how I love your law! All day long I meditate on it…Your words are sweeter in my mouth than honey!” (Psalm 119:97, 103). Likewise, Job declared, “I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread” (Job 23:12b).

In How to Study the Bible, we learn the great benefits of studying Scripture, hindrances to study, basic Bible study tools, and how to interpret and apply it, among other things. Let’s learn how to study God’s Word together with the Bible Teacher’s Guide.

They think she stole the money. She’ll let them.

When five thousand dollars vanishes from the church poor fund, Anna Weaver becomes the only suspect. She could speak up. She could tell the Bishop the truth and clear her name with a single sentence. But that sentence would destroy the people she loves most.

So Anna stays silent, and the shunning begins. Cut off from her community, eating alone at a separate table in her own kitchen while her mother turns away in obedience to the ban, Anna carries a secret so heavy it threatens to break her. And she will bear every last ounce of it before she lets it touch her family…

Set against the thawing landscape of a Pennsylvania winter turning to spring, The Silent Debt is a story about the debts we carry for the ones we love, and the terrifying, beautiful moment when someone reaches out and says, “Let me carry it with you.”

Salt: Remember Lot’s Wife
by S.W. Ogden

The Bible remembers her only as a warning. She remembers everything else.

She is known by what she became in the last moment — a pillar of salt, a backward glance, a caution whispered to the obedient. But before the fire fell on Sodom, she was a woman who built things. Who understood exchanges. Who loved a city the way only someone who chose it freely can love a place. Salt is her story, told in her own voice.

From her father’s house in Haran to the road through Canaan, through the strange humiliation of Egypt and the long return, she traces the life she made alongside Lot — the negotiations, the alliances, the carefully mortared walls of a home in the most beautiful valley she had ever seen. She is shrewd, clear-eyed, and fiercely competent. She reads men the way a merchant reads a scale. She builds, and what she builds is good. And then the strangers come to the gate…

Salt is a novel about what it costs to love a place more than a command — about a woman who spent twenty years learning to trust her own reckoning, and one night when it was not enough. It is about the mercy that kept moving after she stopped. About daughters who survived. About a scarlet thread running through the ash.

How do Sunday school teachers lead children through the stories of Cain and Abel or Judas’s betrayal in a way that reflects the authority of Scripture? Sunday school curricula often glosses over difficult lessons or focuses too much on characters in Bible stories, neglecting God’s self-revelation in Scripture. John and Kim Walton have created this handbook for 175 Bible stories to assist teachers and parents in knowing what each story teaches and how to present it in a God-centered way.

As they work their way through the Bible, the Waltons examine seven elements in each story: focus, theme, application, place in the Bible, interpretational issues, historical and cultural background, and age-group appropriateness…

Biblical scholars Brandon O’Brien and Randy Richards shed light on the ways that Western readers often misunderstand the cultural dynamics of the Bible. They identify nine key areas where modern Westerners have significantly different assumptions about what might be going on in a text.

Drawing on their own cross-cultural experience in global mission, O’Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God

The voice that spoke the cosmos into existence is the same voice that parted the Red Sea, and made the sun stand still in the midday sky. One day, this voice will make all things new, but it’s also speaking to you now!

That voice is God’s voice, and what we’ve learned from Scripture is that He often speaks in a whisper. Not to make it difficult to hear Him, but to draw us close.

Many people have a tough time believing God still speaks. Sure, in ancient times and in mysterious ways, God spoke to His people, but is He still speaking now?
