1 Thessalonians: Hoping in Christ’s Return
by Gregory Brown

Paul founded the Thessalonian church during his second missionary journey but was forced to leave due to persecution (Acts 17:1-10). After brief ministries in Berea and Athens (Acts 17:10-34), he sent Timothy to check on the Thessalonians (3:1-5), then moved to Corinth for eighteen months (Acts 18:1, 11).
When Timothy rejoined Paul, he brought mixed news: the Thessalonians were growing in faith, love, and endurance (1:3, 6, 2:14, 3:6), but faced severe persecution (3:3-4), attacks on Paul’s character (2:1-12), concerns about deceased believers and whether they would miss the second coming (4:13-18), uncertainty about Christ’s return and whether they would experience judgment (5:1-11), and laziness due to misunderstandings about the end times (4:11-12, 5:14).
In response to these, Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians. In it, Paul praised the Thessalonians for their virtues (1:3), defended his ministry (2:1-12), clarified the second coming—which is mentioned in every chapter, as it’s the epistle’s major theme (1:10, 2:19, 3:13, 4:15-16, 5:23)

Willow Finch believes in miracles. She has to…
At sixteen, Willow’s biggest worries should be school, choir, and whether Owen will take her to the Christmas formal. Instead, her entire world shifts when her father is diagnosed with cancer.
Willow does the only thing she knows how to do. She prays. And at first, it seems God is listening.
But as her father’s illness takes an unexpected turn, Willow questions everything she’s always believed. If God hears her prayers, then why isn’t He healing her dad? And if faith can’t save the person she loves most, what is she supposed to believe in now?
Sometimes the answer to a prayer isn’t what we asked for. Sometimes, it’s grace.

Sinai & Zion: An Entry into the Jewish Bible
by Jon D. Levenson

A treasury of religious thought and faith–places the symbolic world of the Bible in its original context.
Classic scholarly introduction to the Hebrew Bible’s core symbolic traditions. Levenson examines the two great mountain traditions that shaped ancient Israelite religion and later Judaism: Sinai, the mountain of the covenant where God established a relationship with Israel through law and mitzvot, and Zion, the mountain of the Temple in Jerusalem, associated with sacred space, the Davidic monarchy, and cosmic order. Drawing on ancient Near Eastern context, he elucidates how these complementary yet sometimes tense traditions—historical covenant and mythic temple—gave biblical faith its distinctive shape, durability, and identity, offering a theologically rich entry into the symbolic world of the Jewish Bible.

Not in It to Win It

Is it possible to disagree politically and love unconditionally? The reaction of evangelicals to political and cultural shifts in recent years revealed what they value most. Lurking beneath our Bible-laced rhetoric, faith claims, books, and sermons is a relentless drive to WIN!
But the church is not here to win. By every human measure, our Savior lost. On purpose. With a purpose. And we are his body. We are not in it to win anything. We are in it for something else entirely. That something else is what this book is about.
Jesus never asked his followers to agree on everything. But he did call his followers to obey a new command: to love others in the same way he has loved us. Instead of asserting our rights or fighting for power, we need to begin asking ourselves: what does love require of me?
